Szentegyháza (formerly Vlăhița) was granted city status in 1968 following a new administrative-territorial reorganization, through the merger of the towns of Vlăhița (Szentegyházasfalu) and Baia Sfântu Cruce (Szentkeresztbánya), supplemented by Băile Homorod (Homoródfürdő) and Mina Lueta (Lövétebánya). Its development was supported by the tradition of the iron industry and the accelerated socialist industrialization during the Nicolae Ceaușescu era, particularly in the Baia Sfântu Cruce area, where the main institutions were concentrated. Under the influence of socialist urban policies, apartment blocks, utility networks, and sports facilities were built, while cultural life underwent significant development. However, we cannot speak of a typically socialist urbanization, as the scale of investment did not reach the level of Romania’s major cities. Among the causes was the ethnic structure of the population, which was predominantly Hungarian. The study presents the institutional and cultural evolution of the city during the period 1968–1989.
Keywords: socialist urbanization, industrialization, Vlăhița, the ironworks in Baia Sfântu Cruce
